sandy woke up early
she stumbled down the stairs
but something strange had happened
her parents were not there

she checked the backyard garden
she checked the basement too
she looked under her parents’ bed
all empty through and through

sandy tried the neighbor
roland was his name
she banged and banged on his front door
had he vanished just the same?

up and down around the block
poor sandy searched and yelled
the response was only silence
her town sat deathly still

so sandy walked into the city
she traced the road downtown
it took her several hours
though not a soul was found

just buildings, cars, and empty streets
the things they left behind
no signs no stories no signals
no answers she could find

sandy was the last one left
the only girl alive

and though she wished on every star
nobody ever arrived
